What Happens When You Upload a PDF

When you upload a PDF, Quizzen first determines whether it contains selectable text or scanned images. For text-based PDFs, the system extracts the content directly using PyMuPDF. For scanned PDFs, the OCR engine automatically activates, reads the page images, and converts them to text — all without any action on your part.

Once the text is extracted, the AI (powered by GPT-5) reads through the content and identifies the most important facts, definitions, concepts, and relationships in the material. It then generates questions that test understanding of those key points — not random surface details. The AI also generates plausible but incorrect distractors for multiple choice questions, which are contextually relevant to the topic rather than obviously wrong.

The entire extraction and generation process typically completes in 15 to 30 seconds for a standard document. Longer documents with many pages may take slightly more time.

Also works with Word and PowerPoint. Quizzen converts PDF, Word (.docx), and PowerPoint (.pptx) files. See our AI Quiz Generator page for the full overview of all supported formats.

What Types of PDFs Does Quizzen Support?

Not all PDFs are the same. Quizzen handles both main categories:

Text-Based PDFs

PDFs with selectable, copyable text. This includes:

  • Textbooks and academic articles
  • Digital lecture notes
  • Training manuals and guides
  • Policy and compliance documents
  • Research papers and reports

Scanned PDFs (OCR)

Image-based PDFs where text is not selectable. Quizzen automatically activates OCR to read these:

  • Scanned printed textbooks
  • Photographed handouts
  • Archived historical documents
  • Scanned exam papers

Page and File Size Limits

  • Free plan: Up to 20 pages per PDF, up to 10 questions generated
  • Pro plan: Unlimited pages, unlimited questions, files up to 100 MB
  • Enterprise plan: Same as Pro, plus API access for programmatic PDF quiz generation

For documents longer than the page limit on the free plan, Quizzen processes the first 20 pages. Upgrading to Pro removes all page restrictions.

What Types of Questions Are Generated from Your PDF?

The AI generates three question formats from your PDF content. You can select one, two, or all three types before running the generator. Here is what each type looks like and when it works best:

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

Each MCQ has a question stem, one correct answer, and three contextually plausible distractors. The AI generates distractors that are related to the topic — not obviously wrong — making the questions genuinely challenging.

Best for: Knowledge checks, certification prep, standardized assessments, Kahoot game sessions, and Moodle quiz imports.

True / False Questions

The AI takes factual statements from your PDF and marks them as true or false. False statements are plausible misstatements of the actual content — not nonsensical.

Best for: Quick comprehension checks, policy compliance training, warm-up exercises, and low-stakes formative assessment.

Fill-in-the-Blank Questions

The AI takes key sentences from the PDF and removes a critical word or phrase. Learners must recall the missing term from memory rather than recognizing it from options.

Best for: Vocabulary acquisition, technical terminology, definitions, and assessments that require active recall over recognition.

Difficulty Levels with Bloom's Taxonomy

Before generating your quiz, you can set the cognitive difficulty using Bloom's Taxonomy levels. This ensures the questions match your instructional goals — from basic recall (Remember) to deeper reasoning (Analyze). This feature is particularly useful for instructional designers and educators who need assessments to align with formal learning objectives.

Who Uses PDF to Quiz Conversion — and Why

Teachers Converting Course Materials

A teacher with a 30-page chapter from a textbook can upload the PDF and have a 20-question quiz ready in under a minute. No retyping, no manual identification of key concepts. The AI reads the chapter the same way a thorough educator would and creates questions that target the content that actually matters.

The Moodle XML export means the quiz can go directly into the school's LMS without any reformatting. Kahoot and Wooclap exports let teachers run live game-based review sessions from the same generated content. See: Quiz Maker for Teachers.

Students Creating Practice Tests from Lecture PDFs

Students regularly receive lecture slides and reading materials as PDFs. Uploading these to Quizzen and generating a practice quiz is one of the highest-impact study strategies backed by learning science — active self-testing consistently outperforms re-reading for long-term retention.

A student preparing for an exam can convert each week's lecture PDF into a practice quiz, then use those quizzes to identify gaps in their knowledge before test day. See: Quiz Maker for Students.

HR and L&D Teams Converting Policy Documents

Compliance training, onboarding manuals, and safety guidelines all live in PDF format. Quizzen converts these documents into comprehension assessments automatically. An HR team onboarding 20 new employees can have a compliance quiz built from the employee handbook in minutes — not hours.

Enterprise accounts allow the entire L&D team to share a quota pool, and the API access enables integration with existing HRIS systems for automated assessment creation. See: Corporate Training Quiz Generator.

Instructional Designers Drafting Assessment Items

Instructional designers upload source material PDFs to generate a first draft of assessment questions. The AI-generated questions become a working draft that subject matter experts review and refine. This changes the authoring workflow from "write from scratch" to "review and approve," which is dramatically faster for large-scale course development projects.

Export Your PDF Quiz to Any Platform

Generating questions from your PDF is the first step. Getting them to your learners is the second. Quizzen offers five export formats to cover every deployment scenario:

AI PDF Quiz Generation vs. Manual Question Writing

Manual question writing from PDF content is a well-understood bottleneck in education and training. A teacher or instructional designer typically needs to read the source material, identify testable content, write question stems, construct plausible distractors, verify correct answers, and then format the output for delivery. For a 20-question quiz from a 30-page document, this process takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

Task Manual Quizzen AI
Read and analyze PDF content 30–60 min ~5 seconds
Write 20 MCQs with distractors 60–90 min ~20 seconds
Create answer key 10–15 min Automatic
Format for LMS / Kahoot 15–30 min One click
Total time 2–3 hours Under 2 minutes

AI-generated questions are a strong first draft — they identify the right content to test and create plausible distractors. Educators who use Quizzen typically spend 5–10 minutes reviewing and making minor adjustments rather than hours writing from scratch. The AI handles the volume; you apply the judgment.

Built for Teachers Who Want Control

Quizzen does not replace teacher judgment. It creates a first draft from your PDF that teachers can review, improve and export. Every quiz Quizzen generates is fully editable before it reaches students — nothing gets published without your review.

Choose the Number of Questions

Set exactly how many questions you need from your PDF — from a 5-question warm-up to a full 50-question exam.

Choose the Question Type

Mix multiple choice, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank, or generate only the type you need.

Edit Every Question

Rewrite question text, swap the correct answer, or fix a distractor — before your students ever see it.

Regenerate What's Not Right

Not happy with a question? Regenerate it individually instead of starting the whole quiz over.

Export the Way You Teach

PDF, CSV, Moodle XML, Kahoot, or Wooclap — export once your review is done.

Cover What Actually Matters

The AI is instructed to prioritize core concepts in your PDF over trivial details, and to avoid questions that are too obvious to test real understanding.

Why Teachers Need More Than a Basic AI Quiz Generator

  • Basic AI tools create shallow questions. Simple prompt-based generators often produce surface-level recall questions that don't test real understanding.
  • Many tools miss important concepts. Without structured document analysis, generic tools can miss key sections of longer material.
  • Long PDFs are often poorly covered. A 40-page chapter needs more than a quick skim — Quizzen processes the full PDF, including OCR for scanned pages.
  • Teachers need to review before sharing. AI-generated content should be a draft, not a final product. Quizzen is built around a review-and-edit step, not instant publishing.
  • Export matters. A quiz is only useful if it fits your workflow — PDF, CSV, Moodle, Kahoot, and Wooclap are all supported.

Quizzen does not replace teacher judgment. It creates a first draft that teachers can review, improve and export.
